Republic of Chad, is a landlocked country in central Africa. It is
bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African
Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest, and
Niger to the west
Chad, after which the country is named, is the largest wetland in Chad
and the second largest in Africa. Chad's highest peak is the Emi
Koussi in the Sahara, and N'Djamena,(formerly Fort-Lamy), the capital,
is the largest city
For more than 2000 years, the Chadian Basin has been inhabited by
agricultural and sedentary peoples. The region became a crossroads of
civilizations. The earliest of these were the legendary Sao, known
from artifacts and oral histories. The Sao fell to the Kanem Empire,
out in northern Chad, which has sporadically flared up despite several
peace agreements between the government and the rebels. In 2005, new
rebel groups emerged in western Sudan and made probing attacks into
eastern Chad, despite signing peace agreements in December 2006 and
current situation: Chad is a source, transit, and destination country
for children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and
commercial sexual exploitation; the majority of children are
trafficked within Chad for involuntary domestic servitude, forced
tier rating: Tier 2 Watch List - Chad is on the Tier 2 Watch List for
its failure to provide evidence of increasing efforts to combat human
trafficking in 2007; Chad was destabilized during 2007 by civil
conflict leading to a declared state of emergency in February 2008,
part of his education, Chad was chosen by Oswiu, king of Northumbria,
as bishop of the Northumbrian see, while Wilfrid, who had been chosen
for Deira by the sub-king Alcfrith, was absent in Gaul seeking
consecration, soon after the Synod of Whitby (663/4). Faced with a

government treasury by 50%. But in 2006, after the pipeline was

Area: 1,284,634 sq. km. (496,000 sq. mi.); about twice the size of

size of California. Most of its ethnically and linguistically diverse
population lives in the south, with densities ranging from 54 persons
Chad has four bioclimatic zones. The northernmost Saharan zone
averages less than 200 mm (8") of rainfall annually. The sparse human
population is largely nomadic, with some livestock, mostly small
ruminants and camels. The central Sahelian zone receives between 200
