Angola is divided into eighteen provinces (províncias) and 163

Angola is rebuilding its country after the end of a 27-year civil war
in 2002. Fighting between the Popular Movement for the Liberation of
Angola (MPLA), led by Jose Eduardo DOS SANTOS, and the National Union

advantage of high international oil prices. Oil production and its

Angola is located on the South Atlantic coast of West Africa between
Namibia on the south and, with the exception of the enclave of
Cabinda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R.C.) on the north;
the D.R.C. and Zambia form the eastern boundary
Estimates of Angola's population vary, as there has been no census
since 1970, but it is generally estimated at 17 million. Angola has
three main ethnic groups, each speaking a Bantu language: Umbundu 37%,
Kimbundu 25%, and Kikongo 13%. Other groups include Chokwe, Lunda,

faced with starvation.
Angola is the second-largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, yet

Movement for the Liberation of Angola's (MPLA) base is among the
Mbundu people and the multiracial intelligentsia of Luanda. The MPLA,
supported by the Soviet Union and the Eastern bloc, fought against the
National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), an organization based in
